By FAR Chris Rock's best film as of 2014, TOP FIVE finds the comedian in fine form, pulling a powerful trifecta as the Writer/Director/Star of this winning, funny film.
Rock plays Andre Allen, a blockbuster comedy movie star who longs to be taken seriously. Just as his first serious film (a period piece about a slave revolt) is ready to premiere, his reality-TV star fiance Erica Long (Gabrielle Union) drags a camera crew into every facet of their relationship.
When Rosario Dawson enters Andre's life as a reporter assigned to follow him around all day for an in-depth interview on the day his new, serious film premieres, he suddenly connects with her on a different level that spins everything else around him out of balance.
An excellent cast of comedians including JB Smoove, Cedric The Entertainer, Jay Pharoah and Tracy Morgan portray fellow comedians in Tracy's circle as he searches for something "more" in his life.
Rock creates something akin to one of Woody Allen's best films, with a central character full of doubt and hilarious self-observation surrounded by drama and plenty of laughs.
Definitely not for the whole family, TOP FIVE delivers plenty of laughs along with some smart observations about relationships, fame and desire.
Rock is one talented guy and TOP FIVE gets top marks with an A.
