If you are in the mood for a pure popcorn, old fashioned western with a great cast, Kurt Russell rounds up a great time with 1993's TOMBSTONE.
Russell is terrific as legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, looking to retire in Tombstone, AZ but drawn back into enforcing the law by the bad deeds of a nasty bunch of outlaws calling themselves "The Cowboys".
Earp joins his old friend Doc Holliday and his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliott, does anyone do westerns better?) and Morgan (Bill Paxton) to eliminate the Cowboys and take Tombstone back.
Val Kilmer nearly steals the pic as Holliday, a constantly sweaty, gaunt, coughing figure that's lost his health but not his speed on the draw.
The film is fast moving and entertaining as it tells the tale of the growing tension in Tombstone that eventually leads to an well shot gunfight in the OK Corral.
This was released the same time as Kevin Costner's epic 3 hour film "Wyatt Earp" which is very different in tone and strong in its own very different style, but "Tombstone" is the much more enjoyable film.
There's still plenty of story to tell after the gunfight and Kurt is terrific throughout.
Pass the popcorn! Russell and company russle up a solid B+.
