Back in 1974, MGM launched a HUGE box office success with an amazing collection of the best song and dance numbers from their vaults called THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT.
40+ years later, the famous films represented here seem centuries in the past and definitely from another (simpler and much more peaceful!) time.
Every MGM movie star you can think of is represented here, in clips nicely teed up by Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Liza Minnelli, Gene Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor to name a few.
As they stroll through the crumbling ruins of the MGM lot, they share memories and clips from the 30's, 40's and 50's.
There are some incredible standouts. Fred Astaire is just plain brilliant whether he's dancing with a hat rack or Ginger Rogers. His famous scene in which he dances on the walls and ceiling is still amazing today.
Watching Esther Williams film clips are insane, with big budget, huge sets like some 50's version of the Cirque "O" show.
Gene Kelly also shines, with long sequences from "Singing In the Rain" and "An American in Paris" holding up beautifully.
There are some fun oddities as well, with Joan Crawford belting out a tune, Jimmy Stewart singing romantically and even Clark Gable knocking out a fun version of "Puttin On The Ritz".
The tagline for the film's poster was "Boy, do we need it now".
In 2016, it takes you back nicely to a much more innocent time in America and in Hollywood.
Film history and pure entertainment that earns a nostalgic B.
