After a poorly received preview in 2019, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG went back to the drawing board and completely redesigned the title creature. I don't know what the old version looked like, but my grandson and I really enjoyed the final version!
Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) voices the title alien creature with great comic timing and teenager snark, observing the small town around him and all its citizens.
Town sheriff Tom (James Marsden of "Westworld") pairs up with the speedy blue creature as they attempt to avoid the clutches of the evil Doctor Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey in a performance that makes vintage Jerry Lewis sedate by comparison.
Carrey is in full Ace Ventura/Mask mode for the first time in many years and he's clearly enjoying himself more than he has in a very long time.
It's all pretty family friendly and loaded with great special effects and fast paced action.
Well done video game adaptions are a very rare breed and box office winners in that genre arrive even less often. With over $300 million at the box office, families had a great time worldwide, as did Jonah and I.
Carrey ad-libbed most of his lines and all of his physical antics and it's refreshing to see him cut loose in his first film comedy in six years.
If you're looking for a fun film to share with your kids or grandkids, SONIC is a big blue blur of laughs that gets a B. (and a thumbs up from Jonah after multiple viewings...)
