Based on a true story, 2012's LAWLESS is an action packed story about three moonshine running brothers in depression-era Virginia that delivers on every level.
Tom Hardy is Forest Bondurant, who runs the operation and is legendary for being nearly immortal against his enemies. Hardy is really great in the part, just as tough as he was as Batman's adversary Bane, but delivering the power much more quietly in this role.
Shia LaBeouf is youngest brother Jack, the softest of the three brothers who comes of age. I've never been a big fan of LaBeouf, but he's pretty good here and you believe his outrage and transformation from observer to passionate participant in the violence.
Gary Oldman is great as a gangster and Guy Pearce is better than I've ever seen him as lawman Charlie Rakes. Pearce is dark, slimy and pure evil and almost steals the movie.
The rest of the supporting cast is strong too, including Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Jason Clarke (who was so good in Zero Dark Thirty) as the third Bondurant brother.
LAWLESS is filled with graphic violence that's not for the sensitive, beautiful photography and solid acting. An unexpected surprise and a solid A.
