Jurassic Park

Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic Jurassic Park was a special effects ground breaker nearly 20 years ago and it still holds up beautifully today. On the eve of its opening, a test run of a new island adventure park with live dinosaurs goes haywire and adventure reins. The sequence in which the T-Rex escapes its pen and terrorizes Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and kids is textbook Spielberg and flat out brilliant. Watching on Blu-ray in 7.1 DTS sound, this scene alone will rock your system and remind you just how brilliant Spielberg and author Michael Crichton pulled this off. I have fond memories of seeing this with my daughter when she was 9 years old after a two hour wait in a line that surrounded the theatre. Remember those days?

I was surprised after all these years how well the quiet scenes play, how good Richard Attenborough is as John Hammond, what a breakout performance this was for Sam Niell and how grating and over the top Laura Dern's performance is throughout the film. Samuel L. Jackson and Wayne Knight appear in early roles and provide some humor amid the action. John WIlliams score is excellent, as are the live-action and CGI dinos. This is Spielberg at his best. Suspenseful, scary, loud, exciting fun. NOBODY does action sequences better than Spielberg. An A+ modern classic that sits comfortably in my top 100 of all time.
