Trying hard to prove me wrong when I say that any movie with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis is destined to be funny, HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 follows the movie laws of diminishing returns on comedy sequels.
This edition finds our boys a few years older, all sick of working for someone else and deciding to start their own company.
They find their business dreams coming true when they create some kind of super shower buddy (hey, wasn't that what the Dad in Gremlins was always trying to sell???).
Soon, a big company owned by the ruthless Bert Hanson (Cristoph Waltz) and his son Rex (Chris Pine) enter the picture and cause all kind of havoc for the boys.
Waltz is totally wasted in the part, while Pine shows a real flair for comedy again here, adding plenty of laughs.
Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx are all back from the first film and deliver solid fun again, especially Aniston with the biggest part of the three. Her sex starved Dentist on a quest for Dale (Charlie Day) is the best part of the film. More Spacey would have really helped the movie.
But, as comedy sequels often do, the plot resorts to a bumbling kidnapping plot with crosses and double crosses and our three guys falling into scenes of them shouting over each other instead of actually sparring with humorous dialogue.
It just kind of sputters around to its conclusion, which leaves all of us remembering how good the first film was and wishing we'd just watched that again instead.
Warrants only a C, a shrug and a meh.....
