What took me so long to see this movie?
It started with the trailers, that I walked away from shaking my head, thinking "well it was only a matter of time before Marvel finally had a bomb". It was the thought of a big tree and a talking racoon as heroes, yeah, no thanks...
well, I was wrong.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is one of the most enjoyable, humorous, self-aware flicks ever out of the Marvel universe.
Five intergalactic thieves and malcontents are forced to team up to battle their common enemy, Ronan, who is threatening to destroy everything in his path, one planet at a time.
Luckily for us, the five team members are made up of the charming and hilarious Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (although he would prefer you call him StarLord), Zoe Saldana as the dangerous green assassin Gamora, Dave Batista as Drax and the aforementioned tree Groot (voice of Vin Diesel) and racoon Rocket (surprisingly well voiced by Bradley Cooper).
This motley space gang spend the movie battling every situation and creature you can imagine in their quest to defeat Ronan.
The less you know about the story the better, as discovery is half the fun. Director/Writer James Gunn spins so much humor and fun into the story, you can't wipe the smile off your face for the entire two hours. Kudos to Marvel for giving him the reins to this strange story and to Gunn for making it pop off the screen.
Rock music hits of the seventies play a huge part in the story and accompany a great deal of the action to great comic effect.
The special effects are stunning and who knew you could make me care so much about a racoon and a tree that utters four different words of dialogue in the entire film?
Chris Pratt became a movie star overnight, now solidified with his leading role the following summer in the all time blockbuster, "Jurassic World". He knows how to play comedy and action without breaking a sweat and is hilarious throughout.
Michael Rooker and Glenn Close are terrific and John C. Reilly is perfect with every line, getting some of the biggest laughs in the movie.
Set Design, Production Design are fantastic.
I saw this on my buddy Bruce Nelson's new curved 4K system in 3D and it was the best home viewing experience of a movie I've ever had. The new technology really does equal the theatre experience. The 3D effects and picture quality is jaw dropping, along with Dolby Atmos sound system. Bruce, I'll be over at your house every night watching flicks until I upgrade my system, it rocks!
I had this one all wrong. GUARDIANS is sheer fun from start to finish and gets an A.
I am GROOT!
